Economic losses dollar variations assumed:
*First pull = $52 (average cost of medication + labor costs†† + performance losses of one treatment at $23.13/hd†††)
**Second pull = $59 (average cost of medication + labor costs†† + performance losses of two treatments at $30.15/hd†††)
Average cost of medication= $23.60 3
††Labor costs = $5/pull (Average hourly wage of 15.00 4 at approximately 20 min./pull)
†††Performance losses from BRD = Carcass value relative to cattle with no BRD 5 (performance is compromised when BRD occurs early in the feeding period, but cattle that are properly treated will rebound and make compensatory gains that minimize the impact. This does not mean that effects of BRD are neutralized, because cattle that were never diagnosed with BRD had heavier carcasses and more muscle)
***Chronics = half the cost of a dead
****Deads = loss of purchase price paid for feeder calf plus the medicine and labor cost†††† (weight of cattle × price per pound + cost of a second pull**)
††††This does not consider price per pound at death nor the expense of invested feed cost
*This value accounts for average cost of medicine 3, labor 4, performance and death loss 5 and may underestimate your total economic losses associated with BRD.
They do not account for additional labor that may be needed, exact medicine costs, veterinarian fees feed costs and opportunity costs.
For a more accurate cost, ask your Zoetis representative to help factor in individual inputs and medicine costs to the equation.
